A study by the US mobile marketing analytics and attribution platform AppsFlyer showed that downloads of food and beverage delivery (F&B) apps increased 23% from January to early March in Indonesia . Meanwhile, transactions for these apps grew 17% over the same period.

Likewise, there was also an 11% increase in in-app purchases on mobile gaming apps, although downloads fell 12%.

“Since I started working from home on Monday, I have ordered food at least six times as of today [Thursday]”said Adiyasa, a 24-year-old 3D artist whose Jakarta office has implemented a voluntary work-at-home policy since Monday.

“I also went over my monthly budget for mobile game purchases,” he said, explaining that he spent Rp 143,000 (US $ 8.93) in the past week on game boosters. He said he normally only spends 100,000 rupees per month on mobile games.

“When I’m in the office, I don’t pay a lot of attention to games,” he said. “But since I have more time at home, I find myself playing mobile games more often. “

Boosters, he said, could speed up certain features of the games, such as getting experience points or gold in AFK Arena – an idle mobile game away from keyboard strategy.

AppsFlyer collected data from India, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea throughout January, when most cases of COVID-19 were still confined to China, and then again from February to 2 March, when the coronavirus spread to other parts of the world.

Indonesia has seen an increase in coronavirus cases since early March, prompting companies to implement work-from-home policies and limit business travel, in addition to the president’s calls for social distancing.

As such, travel apps have seen a decrease in downloads and bookings as people cancel tickets and postpone the trip. On average, bookings on travel apps fell 25% across all four countries.

“It’s no surprise that travel apps have seen a decrease in transactions due to the spread of COVID-19,” Mense said.

He also called on companies to market their products responsibly by avoiding difficult sales and advised them to participate in awareness campaigns for the pneumonia-like disease without instilling fear.

Data from the other three countries also show similarities with Indonesia. South Korea, one of the countries hardest hit by the virus, saw a 35% increase in mobile game purchases and a 12% increase in F&B shipments. Bookings on travel apps also fell 52%.

Japan saw a 40% increase in F&B deliveries, while travel bookings fell 28%. Meanwhile, India, which as of Wednesday reported a total of 151 COVID-19 cases, has seen a huge 95% increase in F&B shipments, with in-app mobile game purchases also on the rise. by 14%.
