THE Legend of Zelda did not tackle so many genres. Overall, the series could best be described as an open-world action-adventure with a few light RPG elements. Link and other characters have been guest stars in other genres, like fighting with Super Smash Bros. and run in Mario kart 8.
With the release of Hyrule Cadence Putting the franchise into not just a roguelike, but a rhythm game as well, well, that got us thinking where this series could go.
A real RPG
While some might call these games an action RPG, they couldn’t be further from this truth. What we want is a real Zelda RPG. We don’t care if this adds an upgrade system to the current action combat, or if something really new is done. A turn-based or tactical game would be pretty awesome. What if Links Across Time were to unite to stop an evil force? It sounds like a good RPG to us.
By Telltale adventure we basically mean an adventure game or an interactive story. This genre became popular with Telltale’s series of titles including The walking dead and Tales from border countries. This can also include games like Detroit: become human, or the recently published Dark images: the man of Medan. Being able to walk through the life of a random character in Hyrule would be pretty cool. Their decisions could help or hinder the new Link in their quest. Tingle would be a great choice.
The strategy could be seen as a tactical RPG, but we’re thinking broader. Imagine a game where Zelda was made the head of Hyrule. In order for her kingdom to prosper, she must send soldiers to neighboring territories to make peace.
We believe that the 4X model of Civilization would do wonders with this idea. It could also become an RTS like StarCraft. Defend the Kingdom from Ganon’s unstoppable army! Either could be perfect in the right hands.
Closest to the horror of this series is Major mask. Link basically goes to a world in limbo after probably dead, although that’s just a theory. Whether this is true or not, the subject of the story is weird, let alone the spooky moon. It proves that the series has what it takes to step into the world of horror. Imagine a game that comes out unannounced as a Zelda game and then the end is revealed somehow. Entering the Lost Woods and being chased into Hyrule Field would be a good example.
Nintendo has played multiplayer in the world of Zelda before. The most recent example was Heroes of the TriForce on 3DS, which supported three players. The maximum they have tried is only four with Four sword adventures. While a Battle Royale would be too clichÃ© to mention, it’s not impossible to make it work. Enter the Hyrule Field, grab a weapon and fight for your survival. Since there are no guns, only arrows, it could create more tense competition. A MOBA could work as well, although if that did happen we would want it to be entirely Nintendo themed.
This might actually count as another strategy entry, but instead of going to war, we want to populate the kingdom of Hyrule peacefully. A Sims type of game might work well for those who want to relax in the Zelda world without having to do much. That is, there is more to games than action. Maybe Nintendo should just put a few guest characters in the next one. Animal crossing and call it a day.
If we want to get very technical, there has already been a Zelda themed shooter: Link’s Crossbow Training. Since this was only a bundle with the Wii Zapper as an extended minigame, we’re not going to count it. We also don’t want to advocate that Link get a gun or anything like that. Splatoon and Super Mario Sunshine have shown us that a shooter doesn’t have to be bloody and violent, so there is a way for it to work. Linkle would actually be a great choice as she wields two mini crossbows in Hyrule Warriors.
The main games are hack and slash adventures already, but we’d like it to come down to an even finer concoction of beat ’em glory. To imagine THE Legend of Zelda crossed with a heavy brawler weapon like Castle crashers, Where All-metal furies.
It would fit into the multiplayer category as well, but on a smaller scale. Technically, Hyrule Warriors is a brawler, but we want something smaller like classic 2D games in the genre like Golden ax.
The series tried stealth segments before sneaking past the guards at Hyrule Castle in Ocarina of time, or storm the prison of Wind waker. Because stealth was an afterthought, those portions were bad, but a game based on stealth missions would be just the opposite. Why would Link sneak in? He wouldn’t. That’s why a game about Sheik aka Zelda having to sneak around and murder targets would be a better idea. Ubisoft is already quite close with Nintendo so they had to discuss Assassin’s Creed in pitch meetings at one point, right?
If Nintendo isn’t willing to make a new Metroid 2D, they should let another team take care of it. What if they are worried about sales, since Metroid Rarely sells that much, they should instead make a Zelda Metroidvania as this series tends to sell more. Ghost hourglass on the DS had a good idea to bring Link back every now and then in a central dungeon. What if he was still stuck in a giant dungeon and had to move around like in Castlevania? This stuff writes itself! Unfortunately, it does not program itself.
